The Mosque

Plans for the construction of a large Islamic community center (which includes a mosque) near "Ground Zero" in NYC are prompting red-faced outrage... ...vehement protests from the same people who'd be protesting a mosque being built ANYWHERE on American soil.
duh

Setting aside the massive propaganda bonus this was presented to ambitious conservatives like Gingrich, Cornyn, and Palin, the whole drama has been so depressing! It would have been so much more AMERICAN if people had welcomed this mosque, especially New Yorkers, in an act of maturity and decency that would have proven that we really deserve the Freedom of Re
ligion that our founders died for. Evidently many of us don't even begin to grasp the concept; apparently many of us demand freedom only for those who look and think like we do.

I know we can do better than this; I am deeply embarrassed for and disappointed in my country; I expected more.

"On Sept. 11, 2001, thousands of first responders heroically rushed to the scene and saved tens of thousands of lives. More than 400 of those first responders did not make it out alive. In rushing into those burning buildings, not one of them asked, 'What God do you pray to?'" Michael Bloomberg.
