Jed Clampett again?

OK, now this is weird. Not in a nice, Weird Austin kinda way, just weird.

Last night someone noticed something bubbling up out of the ground in an alley behind the Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin, between Congress Avenue and Brazos Street.... oil and water. Lots of oil and water.
An underground water line had ruptured for some reason, but they have no idea where the oil came from. But at this point it seems to be some kind of antique petroleum, possibly heating oil from c. 1900. (I wonder how many other surprises like that we have lying in wait under the city?)

City workers are working hard to clean up the mess that's spilled over parts of Sixth Street and downhill into Waller Creek, heading to Lady Bird Lake. Oh nooooo!! The crews had already cleaned an estimated 20,000 gallons of the oil-water mixture by 8 a.m., and as of 1:30pm they're not done yet.

It is still unclear what caused oil to spill out with the water, because they still don't know where it came from, but supposedly it's been "contained" and there were "no environmental concerns" because of the leak.
Let's hope so!

The water had to be turned off to the filled-to-capacity Driskill Hotel for awhile, but the hotel now has an "alternate source of water". MSome fun, huh?

Two lanes of Sixth Street are closed between Brazos Street and Congress Avenue so crews can break up the road to repair the water line, like Friday rush hour wasn't jammed enough.

Meanwhile, the mystery of the source of the bubblin'crude continues....
