(NOTE: That's Ruby's, with a "b". )
Ruby's is a laid-back little yellow sanctuary just off the Drag on 29th Street. Nobody does barbeque like Ruby's. They've got the best meat, the best sauce, best sides, friendly service, and the vibe is always totally pleasant and welcoming, not to mention the place smells great!
And it's the kind of place I'm totally comfortable going to alone; I order and sit there happily sipping my fresh lemonade and reading the Chronicle until my order arrives, which is never very long. Or you can just read the tables; musicians who've dined there leave their comments, autographs, even pictures.
Plus frequently you see interesting people; like once I was in line right behind Roky Erikson, bless his heart. And actually he looked great, and seemed right at home at Ruby's, which besides being the source of truly righteous barbeque is also sort of an eclectic shrine to musicians, the Blues, and Texas music in particular, with a comfortably funky ambience.
Ruby's with a "b" is conveniently located just off Guadalupe (to the east), at 512 W. 29th Street in Austin. Parking is the only a challenge and that's just at peak times, but it's totally worth it. But if you've gone around the block and can't find a regular space, just call them at (512)-477-1651 for a take out order; they have a parking place for that.
